Territorial approach to adaptation to climate change in the North-East of Kenya

The main purpose of the project is to secure livelihoods of pastoralists, agro-pastoralists and settled inhabitants in the arid and semi-arid north-east and to improve food security and resilience against the effects of climate change through the development and implementation of mid- to long term adaption-strategies.

The project implements capacity building in the following four fields of activity:

Technical Vocational Education & Training (TVET) in the agricultural sector in Africa

The programme’s target groups are population groups in rural Africa affected by poverty and hunger. They include Africans already working in the agricultural sector and in particular young people from rural areas who could be employed in the sector. Of the approximately 1.3 billion absolute poor worldwide, about 388 million live in Africa. Within the target groups, African smallholders, most of who live in poverty, are a priority. They also tend to be more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

Sustainable Economic Development and Employment Promotion (SEDEP)

The overall goal of the intervention is to increase employment opportunities and income in agriculture sector especially poultry products, cashmere, dairy products, wheat, almonds, in North Afghanistan. The project focuses on technical -, organizational - and business skills of the value chain actors, and partly on rehabilitation of rural infrastructure, and improvement of the dialogue between public and private sector actors.

Tasks:

Agricultural and Rural Finance (AGRUFIN) in Uganda

While the financial sector in Uganda at large has experienced considerable growth in recent years, financing for rural areas and agriculture remains limited: only 11% of private sector credit is extended to the agricultural sector and only 15% of the adult population in rural areas use formal financial services (compared to more than 45% in urban areas). Existing financial products rarely respond to the needs of the rural population, many of which are small-holder farmers, while women continue to be particularly disadvantaged.
