Support to the national programme for sustainable smallholder irrigation agriculture (PASSIP): Delivery of six technical and economic studies

Through a delegated co-operation mechanism, the German co-operation is currently implementing, via its executing agency GIZ, the programme "Support to the national programme for sustainable smallholder irrigation agriculture" (PASSIP). In this context, the consortium AFC-ECO is responsible for carrying out several studies on various subjects, namely:

Programme for the Promotion of Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development (PAD II) : Strengthening of Farmer-Based Organizations

This contract aims at strengthening farmer-based organizations (FBO) as part of the GIZ PAD II programme. In Tunisia, two types of FBO can be distinguished: a) the Mutual Agricultural Service Companies (Sociétés Mutuelles de Services Agricoles, SMSA) and b) the Agricultural Development Groups (Groupements de Développement Agricole, GDA).

Programme for the Promotion of Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development (PAD II) : Preparation of an Agripreneurship Guide 2.0

The aim of the contract is the preparation of a manual (“guide”) to provide information and services for entrepreneurs in the agricultural and agri-food sector (“agripreneurs”) in Tunisia.  This guide will support the development of agricultural entrepreneurship capacities, startups and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) in the agriculture and agri-food sector, also integrating information and communication technologies (ICT).

Malawi_More Income and Employment in Rural Areas (MIERA)

Malawi’s economy is characterised by a high dependence on agriculture, with little value being added in the country. The vast majority of rural workers are engaged in micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) or operate as smallholders. They are usually dependent on middlemen, have limited access to the market and often lack adequate market information. Consequently, for the most part, they have just a few options for reaching new and higher-end markets and for increasing their income by expanding business activities and by processing products.

Technical Vocational Education & Training (TVET) in the agricultural sector in Africa

The programme’s target groups are population groups in rural Africa affected by poverty and hunger. They include Africans already working in the agricultural sector and in particular young people from rural areas who could be employed in the sector. Of the approximately 1.3 billion absolute poor worldwide, about 388 million live in Africa. Within the target groups, African smallholders, most of who live in poverty, are a priority. They also tend to be more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
