Innovations for Agriculture and Agro-Food (IAAA) - Milk Value Chain in Tunisia

 

The “Innovations for Agriculture and Agro-Food (IAAA)” project is implemented in Tunisia as part of the GIZ Global Project "Green Innovation Centres for the Agriculture and Food Sector (GIC)".

The overall objective of the project is to improve the socio-economic situation of smallholder farmers in rural areas through sustainable innovations to increase agricultural productivity and income. In 2016, the milk value chain was selected as a priority value chain by the IAAA project due to its socio-economic importance.

The global program "Green Innovation Centers for the agriculture and food Sector" is part of the special initiative "One World Without Hunger" of the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The component in Tunisia is one of 16 country programs of this global program and works on the sustainable development of two value chains: potato and milk.

Strengthening employment promotion structure in Tunisia

The high unemployment rate and underemployment, particularly in the interior regions of Tunisia, are coupled with a severe shortage of adequately trained workers. Only few young people in rural areas had the opportunity to benefit from qualification services and efficient employment services.

This situation has put the Tunisian government under strong pressure to offer employment opportunities to the many un- and underemployed young and adult people likewise, especially in the interior regions of the country.
