Programme for Sustainable Economic Development (PSED) – IA3

MSMEs form the backbone of the Ghanaian economy. They make up approx. 85% of the enterprises and contribute approx. 70% to the GDP. The proportion of MSMEs run by women is comparatively high at 46%. The majority of MSMEs (95%) are microenterprises belonging to the informal sector. The growth prospects of MSMEs in the informal and formal economy are increasingly impaired by low productivity and competitiveness. More than 50% of all formalised MSMEs consider lack of access to finance to be the biggest obstacle to their business growth. 91% of all family businesses have no access to external financing.

The GIZ Programme for Sustainable Economic Development (PSED) encompasses advisory and supporting services in five intervention areas (IA). The overall objective of the Technical Cooperation (TC) measure is to improve the conditions for decent, productive employment.

Our consortium is responsible for intervention area 3 (IA3) Financial Systems Development – financial inclusion. The specific objective of IA3 is to improve MSME´s access to financial services, through support to improve the supply of needs-based financial and insurance services, as well as accompanying measures to develop the capacity of MSMEs to access and benefit from these services.
