Consulting service for an optimization of fodder systems by zone and climatic conditions in the Center-West of Tunisia

The global program "Green Innovation Centers for the agriculture and food Sector" is part of the special initiative "One World Without Hunger" of the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The component in Tunisia is one of 16 country programs of this global program and works on the sustainable development of two value chains: potato and milk. The objective of the project, implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in cooperation with the Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture, Hydraulic Resources and Fisheries (MARHP) and the Agricultural Investment Promotion Agency (APIA), is to improve the socio-economic situation of small farmers in rural areas through sustainable innovations for increasing productivity and farm income.

Throughout Tunisia, farmers generally diversify activities on their farms, such as animal husbandry, arboriculture and market gardening. Dairy production is an essential component in the Tunisian agricultural farm, it is very important especially in the North-West and Centre-West as a main activity; it is also present in other regions in the Centre/South but as a secondary activity.

Objectives:

  • to carry out a field analysis of existing fodder systems in the selected areas and for the target group of smallholders;
  • to develop detailed recommendations, which are applicable and practical for the target group of smallholders and their fodder systems and adapted to the specific climatic conditions in all the selected areas
