On 12th of October 2016, more than 150 people celebrated the official opening of a new project on organic agriculture in Ukraine. The project “German-Ukrainian Cooperation in the field of organic agriculture” is financed under the Economic Cooperation Programme of the German Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) and is implemented by AFC (lead) and IAK. The team leader on site is Joachim Lenz.
The celebration has been attended by a variety of stakeholders. The German delegation, led by Antje Frehse (BMEL), representatives of the Ukrainian Ministries of Agriculture (Mykola Moroz) as well as Agroosvita (Tatjana Ishchenko), project partners, the German embassy, the private sector and many students attended the celebration at the National Agro-Ecological University of Zhytomyr (NAEUZ). The university hosts the project office and is one of the implementation partners of the project. The promotion of valuable and practice-oriented courses in the field of organic agriculture in universities is a key intervention area of the project. In his speech, Oleg Skydan, rector of the NAEUZ, highlighted the role of organic agriculture at the university.
Next to the NAEUZ, a private agricultural enterprise, GALEKS-AGRO, is also partnering with the project for its successful implementation. The enterprise offered a selection of its organic milk, yoghurt and cheeses during the event. Together with GALEKS-AGRO the project aims to increase capacities of farm managers and technicians of organic agricultural farms in Ukraine.
Project activities have started with the collaboration in conferences and events targeting organic agricultural production and building networks among key stakeholders in the field. Throughout the project duration of three years, the project aims to increase the quality of organic agricultural production through education and training of managers and specialists in Ukrainian organic farming.
