Deforestation-free supply chains (ELKE)

The “Deforestation-free supply chains” program, financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development  aims to improve the framework conditions and capacities of key actors to increase the sustainability of production and marketing in the agriculture and aquaculture supply chains for cocoa, shrimp, livestock, timber and pitahaya, thereby reducing pressure on forest ecosystems in the provinces of Esmeraldas and Manabí.

Tasks of the expert:

  • Responsible for establishing two national or sub-national guidelines and strategies that serve as the basis for certification or incentive for deforestation-free production and marketing for the livestock sector for implementation by relevant state technical agencies, financial regulators and private sector associations
  • Advise on the establishment of two supply agreements for the livestock sector at national or sub-national level in which sustainable, regenerative, deforestation-free livestock production is an integral part
  • Coordinate the establishment in the livestock chain of at least one state or private traceability system, including verification of the source of supply, incorporating drone and satellite data to monitor changes in land use and forest conservation
  • Provide information and ensure monitoring of the impact of the work packages, as well as regular and timely reporting on related activities
  • Establish collaborative relationships with partners, non-governmental organisations and institutional bodies at local and regional levels to develop and implement ELKE programme actions
  • Advising local stakeholders and counterparts
  • Monitoring of local grants (change projects)
  • Experience in mainstreaming gender and youth in their actions
  • Coordinate activities with the GIZ team at national and local level, with local governments, local organisations and private actors
Qualifications: 
  • University degree (e.g. master’s) in agricultural or veterinary sciences or comparable disciplines
  • Knowledge of English, A2-level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
  • Proficiency in Spanish language on C2 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
  • Knowledge of English, A2-level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
  • 10 years of professional experience in the livestock sector and in the development of sectoral public policies
  • 6 years of professional experience in the sustainable strengthening of livestock value chains with the public and private sector
  • 10 years of professional experience in Ecuador
  • 2 years of experience in development cooperation projects
  • 2 years experience in financial and project management (project budgets, grants), work experience working with GADs and producer organisations, experience working with the private sector
