Business models and finance solutions for conservation, restoration and sustainable use of high Andean wetlands, Ecuador

The objective of the project to improve the regulatory, technical and financial framework conditions for the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of high Andean wetlands (understanding wetlands as the whole “Páramo” ecosystem and considering a special focus on wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar convention).

The target group is the predominantly poor rural population in selected landscapes in the high Andean provinces of Cotopaxi, Tungurahua, Chimborazo and Cañar, as well as Bolívar and Azuay.

Tasks of the expert

  • Support the information campaigns and the process to identify/develop/design financing solutions for conservation and restoration of the paramo together with the short-term Pool
  • Map available or new financing solutions and potential cooperation partners such as ministries (MAATE, MAG, MPCEIP), financial institutions (banks, cooperatives), organizations, international cooperation, national programs (PECC), etc. (including analysis of MRV requirements)
  • Advise on the development of financial instruments and products with relevant public and private institutions, including financial sector
  • Prepare the methodology and a roadmap for finance training courses
  • Approach and motivate the private sector to engage in financing solutions for the conservation and restoration of Andean wetlands
  • Build or strengthen the capacities of the target group and institutions through workshops on financing
  • Strengthen the capacities of organizations to access finance and funding opportunities that promote sustainable production, conservation, and restoration
  • Provide information and ensure impact monitoring of the work conducted as well as regular and timely reporting
  • Establish collaborative relationships with partners, non-governmental organizations, and institutional bodies at local and regional level to develop and implement project actions
  • Development of three financial solutions to promote the conservation and restoration or the sustainable use of high-Andean wetlands
Qualifications: 
  • Master’s degree in economics, sustainable and green finance or comparable disciplines
  • Knowledge of English, B2-level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and Spanish language skills, C2 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages 
  • 5 years of professional experience in the development of green finance and financial products for the agricultural / biodiversity / environment sector and development and/or implementation of international and national green finance programs
  • 4 years of professional experience in capacity building processes on green financing and experience in the preparation of proposals for competitive environmental projects
  • 2 years of professional experience outside Ecuador
  • 6 years of professional experience in the Andean Highlands Region (Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Chile or Argentina) and 3 years in Ecuador
  • 2 years of experience in development cooperation projects
