So far, Morocco's rural provinces have contributed little to the country's economic growth. Between 10 and 15% of the population lives in poverty. Youth unemployment is 23%, rural youth are disproportionately affected by unemployment and underemployment. The incomes of those working in rural provinces of whom more than 40% are active in agriculture, rarely exceed the level of subsistence. Local processing and value-adding of agricultural products is low. A large proportion of SME in rural provinces has low profitability and low competitiveness. More than 90% of SME produce mainly for the local market, new sales markets for agricultural products are barely developed. The economic performance of SME in some provinces is insufficient.
The project « Promotion of local economic development in remote areas » (PEDEL) is part of the special initiative "Stabilisation and Development in North Africa and the Middle East" (SI-MENA) of the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
Objective of the project is to improve the economic performance of very small, small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) in selected provinces.
