Since 2019, AFC is supporting the implementation of the GIZ project “Response to increased demand on government services and creation of economic opportunities in Uganda – RISE”, which is co-financed by the EU and aims to increase economic opportunities for Sudanese refugees and the population of the respective host communities in North-West Uganda. AFC supports small-scale agricultural producers in their ability to engage in market-oriented production and their capacity to apply climate smart good agricultural practices. In parallel, rural livelihoods are being supported through the provision of selected inputs like seeds and small ruminants as well as small agricultural infrastructures for solar powered irrigation.
GIZ RISE has recently won the EU World Refugee Day Photo Contest, with photos from the activities implemented by AFC. See below the winning photos and the story behind them.
Climate Smart Agriculture
As part of the efforts to promote climate-smart farming, the RISE project supports the making of seedlings from biodegradable materials such as leaves and recycled paper. The leaves are cost-effective and readily available from nature. Therefore, farmers can make many seedlings without inhibition.
Improved Livelihoods / Food Security
In November 2020, the family of Nyak Toung received two goats from the RISE project. Today, they are proud owners of 6 goats, which improves the overall food security for the entire family.
Increased Production and Income from Agricultural Activities
Tabule Michael of Itula Subcounty in Obongi District is one of 158 farmers benefitting from year-round vegetable growing because of improved irrigation technologies. His yield was usually affected by unreliable rainfall and long dry seasons. In 2022, the EUTF-funded GIZ RISE project installed seven solar-driven cutting-edge irrigation systems. Since then, Michael was able to improve his productivity and consequently his income significantly.
