Ghana is an emerging middle-income country. Agriculture still plays an important role in the socio-economic development of the country, despite it’s relative, compared to other sectors slow growth.
The sector account for a quarter of GNP, employs 44% of the country's workforce, secures the extensive supply of basic food and provides a large part of national export earnings. Small businesses generate almost 80% of total agricultural production. Productivity and product quality are low, especially in small businesses. The horticulture sector in Ghana is ambitious, but internationally little competitive. Overall, the quality of production in the agricultural sector is low.
Within this new upcoming project, the focus is on improving the quality of production in agriculture, in particular horticultural crops.
Specific key tasks:
- Develop an inventory of common interest groups in the supported districts and assess their stage of development and their capacity building needs
- Facilitate the process of involving common interest groups in the identification of necessary agricultural infrastructure and link them with District Assembly or private investors
- Facilitate the mobilisation of financial contributions for investments into infrastructure
- For irrigation dams and water harvesting schemes establish water user committees (including fish and livestock farmers) and support the implementation of decisions reached by these committees
- Advise user groups to manage agricultural infrastructure effectively and business-like
- Organise training for operators of commonly managed agricultural infrastructure in developing maintenance plans and Standard Operational Procedures for preventive maintenance, regular assessment of competencies
- Facilitate meetings of local private and public stakeholders to discuss common activities on value chain improvement
- Ensure participation of stakeholders from the production centres in the North and Middle Belt Facilitate in national roundtable meetings of certain industries (e.g. mango, vegetables) and link associations from the North to FAGE for trade facilitation activities
- Sensitise leaders of community groups on green cover management and build capacity on consensus finding and enforcement measures
Key competences and qualifications required:
- MSc. or MA minimum
- University studies in agriculture or social sciences
- Experience in successful facilitation of community action
- Professional writing skills (publications)
- Minimum 5 years professional experience in rural development
- Minimum 3 years professional experience in interest group facilitation and/or community mobilisation in Northern Ghana
