Market Oriented Agriculture Programme (MOAP)

Ghana is an emerging middle-income country. Agriculture still plays an important role in the socio-economic development of the country, despite it’s relative, compared to other sectors slow growth.

The sector account for a quarter of GNP, employs 44% of the country's workforce, secures the extensive supply of basic food and provides a large part of national export earnings. Small businesses generate almost 80% of total agricultural production. Productivity and product quality are low, especially in small businesses. The horticulture sector in Ghana is ambitious, but internationally little competitive. Overall, the quality of production in the agricultural sector is low.

Within this new upcoming project, the focus is on improving the quality of production in agriculture, in particular horticultural crops.

Qualifications: 

Responsible for Indicator: 65% of clients of 50 selected agro-input dealers who provide agricultural advice are satisfied with the quality of service

Specific key tasks:

  • Cooperate with the Private Sector Development Expert in the design of a programme for 50 agro-input dealers to become points of agricultural advice
  • Identify participating agro-input dealers
  • Organise training of sales staff in pest and disease identification, IPM, application of crop protection products, personal and environmental safety as follow-up
  • Coordinate the display of information material in the store
  • Cooperate with the Private Sector Development Expert in the design of a branding strategy for participating agro-input dealers and support them in its implementation
  • Support input importers for the testing and registration of innovative inputs
  • Organise surveys to assess satisfaction of clients of participating agro-input dealers

 

Key competences and qualifications required:

  • MSc. minimum
  • University studies in agriculture or natural sciences
  • Profound knowledge and experience in dealing with major pests and diseases in Ghana
  • Experience in organising trainings (preferably Competency Based Trainings)
  • Minimum 5 years professional experience in agricultural sector development
  • Minimum 3 years professional experience in crop protection
  • Proof of familiarity with Microsoft Office, especially Excel
