Deforestation-free supply chains (ELKE)

The “Deforestation-free supply chains” program, financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development  aims to improve the framework conditions and capacities of key actors to increase the sustainability of production and marketing in the agriculture and aquaculture supply chains for cocoa, shrimp, livestock, timber and pitahaya, thereby reducing pressure on forest ecosystems in the provinces of Esmeraldas and Manabí.

Tasks of the expert

  • Advise at least 10 producer organisations in livestock chains in the provinces of Esmeraldas and Manabí, to implement services focused on sustainable and free production through the extensionists trained by the project
  • Coordinate actions to ensure that 600 farms in the livestock chains of around 10 organisations in Esmeraldas and Manabí apply regenerative livestock farming techniques, forest conservation and deforestation-free production in the project intervention area through the work of extensionists
  • Strengthen the conditions of the organisations to access financing opportunities that promote sustainable production, conservation and deforestation-free production
  • Lead the development of a work plan to strengthen at least 10 organisations selected from the livestock chains in the provinces of Esmeraldas and Manabí (section 2.3)
  • Advise to strengthen the conditions for actors and organisations to implement a traceability system in the livestock chain, including verification of the source of supply
  • Provide information and ensure the monitoring of the impact of the work packages, as well as regular and timely reporting on the related activities
  • Establish collaborative relationships with partners, non-governmental organisations and institutional bodies at local and regional level to develop and implement ELKE project actions
  • Advising local stakeholders and counterparts
  • Monitoring of local grants (change projects)
  • Experience in mainstreaming gender and youth in their actions
  • Coordinate activities with the GIZ team at national and local level, with local governments, local organisations and private actors
Qualifications: 
  • University degree (e.g. master’s) in agricultural sciences, local development, veterinary sciences or comparable disciplines
  • English A2-level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
  • General professional experience : 10 years of professional experience sustainable livestock chain development and organisational strengthening
  • Specific professional experience : 6 years of professional experience in capacity building and rural extension processes
  • 10 years of professional experience in Ecuador
  • 2 years of experience in development cooperation projects
  • 2 years of work experience in working with the private sector, and in mainstreaming sustainability, gender and youth in their work
