Deforestation-free supply chains (ELKE)

The “Deforestation-free supply chains” program, financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development  aims to improve the framework conditions and capacities of key actors to increase the sustainability of production and marketing in the agriculture and aquaculture supply chains for cocoa, shrimp, livestock, timber and pitahaya, thereby reducing pressure on forest ecosystems in the provinces of Esmeraldas and Manabí.

Tasks of the expert

  • Responsible for strengthening the capacities of financial actors to encourage the adaptation and application of sustainable production techniques and marketing practices for shrimp, livestock, pitahaya, timber and cocoa in the provinces of Manabí and Esmeraldas
  • Responsible for strengthening the capacities of actors in the livestock sector to encourage the adaptation and application of sustainable production techniques and marketing practices in the provinces of Manabí and Esmeraldas
  • Design and implementation of two training programmes on financial mechanisms, education and instruments for banks, cooperatives, public institutions and organisations assisted by the project
  • Diagnosis, design and implementation of training processes for livestock extensionists in Manabí and Esmeraldas
  • Lead in coordination with the GIZ team the development of at least eight knowledge products related to the implementation of the project in the financial sector and livestock chains in Esmeraldas and Manabí, of which at least two should emphasise gender, youth, indigenous or Afro-Ecuadorian issues
  • Provide information and ensure the monitoring of the impact of the work packages, as well as regular and timely reporting on the corresponding activities.
  • Establish collaborative relationships with partners, non-governmental organisations and institutional bodies
Qualifications: 
  • University degree (e.g. master’s) in agricultural science, economics, education or comparable disciplines
  • Knowledge of English, A2-level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
  • Proficiency in Spanish language on C2 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
  • 10 years of professional experience in the agricultural, rural development, finance and knowledge management sector
  • 6 years of professional experience in the development of training programmes for producers and rural organisations
  • 10 years of professional experience in Ecuador
  • 4 years of experience in development cooperation projects
  • 2 years experience in financial and project management (project budgets, grants), work experience working with GADs and producer organisations
