Agribusiness Development in South Sudan

The overall objective of the ZEAT-BEAD project is to contribute to improved food security and income of the population of the Republic of South Sudan; and the purpose is “improved food security and income for rural smallholders”.
 
The purpose of this contract is to develop national and State policies and standards and enhance the coordination capacity of national and State governments to support the development of an environment conducive to agribusiness. The technical assistance will be responsible for the provision of support to the national and State Ministries of Agriculture, Livestock and Physical Infrastructure in the 4 States of the greater Bahr el Ghazal area, in the elaboration of specific policies, acts and standard regulations. The technical assistance will also be responsible for the overall coordination of the different components of the 2 EU rural development programmes 'Improved food security and income for rural smallholders' (ZEAT-BEAD) and 'South Sudan rural development programme' (Sorudev).

The implementation strategy will revolve around improving the productivity of smallholders, along with increasing possibilities of generating income by adding value or securing a stronger position in the value chain. Some of the targets aim include an average sorghum yield of 1200 kg/ha and reduced calf mortality from 40% to 20% (in the absence of negative shocks). This is expected to shorten the duration of the hunger gap, particularly for the most vulnerable households. Improved life skills, such as enhanced levels of literacy and numeracy across all age groups within the targeted population, are also anticipated.
