Senior Expert on Agriculture and Tourism Finance for the Consulting Services for the Albania Agribusiness and Tourism Support Facility (AATSF)

Background:

 

Agriculture is a key economic sector in Albania generating around 20% of GDP (vs. 2% average in the EU) and is the main source of employment in rural areas, counting for about 48% of the employed population (vs. 3% in the EU). The key challenge remains transforming agriculture from a subsistence-oriented production into a modern, commercial and competitive sector.

Albanian Development Guarantee Foundation (ADGF)Start-up Window for Covid-19 Recovery

The Albanian Development Guarantee Foundation (ADGF) in Albania aims to improve access to finance for micro-, small and medium sized enterprises (MSMEs) through the provision of guarantees to local financial institutions since 2015. In 2020, since the Albanian economy was severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, the German government (BMZ) provided grant funding via the German development bank, KfW, to establish a “Covid-19 Guarantee Window” with high coverage rates and concessional guarantee fees.

International agriculture expert CoSolve-19 initiative for Albanian MSMEs

The overarching goal of the CoSolve-19 initiative is to support MSMEs that are severely hit by the consequences of coronavirus crisis in Albania, first and foremost, to maintain employment or even increase it. In pursuing this initiative, ProSEED and SRD make a significant contribution to an effective crisis management of a bigger number of MSMEs in sectors of the Albanian economy that were severely hit by the coronavirus crisis.

Technical Cooperation with Albania

 

The BMZ-funded TC module on rural development "Sustainable Development in Rural Areas in Albania", implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH since January 2019.

The TC module applies an integrated approach on rural development with a focus on agriculture and rural tourism. 

The TC module works in four fields of interventions (Outputs) so that:

Albania_Team Leader rural value chains

Albania is in the Western Balkans with a population of 2.862.427 inhabitants (as of January 2019), of which nearly 50% live in rural areas. The agriculture sector is of crucial importance with regard to socio-economic development in Albania as it contributes about 23% to the country’s GDP and accounts 42% of the overall employment.

The Fruits, Vegetables, Medicinal and Aromatic Plant (MAPs) and Small Ruminants Value Chains are among the most important sub-sectors of Albania’s agriculture

Livestock - Improvement of the performance and quality of the public extension service

The project on Improvement of the performance and quality of the public extension service in the livestock sector will focus toward improving and strengthening the capacity and role of the extension service to inform and disseminate the best agricultural practices and knowledge to the farming sector, making it become more competitive and comply with EU standards.
