Dairy Value Chain - Zambia

The overall objective of the GIC’s activities along the dairy value chain is to improve the income of smallholder dairy farmers in Southern Province, increase the employment rate and the improvement of the local availability of dairy products

Key tasks for the (inter-/national or regional) long-term expert include:

  • Project management tasks (and team leader)
  • Implementing the dairy value chain component
  • Managing the team provided by the Firm of Consultants and close communication with contact person for GIZ
  • Responsibility for carrying out checks on the use of funds and financial planning in consultation with the implementing officer of the country package Zambia
  • Responsibility for the prudent processes following GIZ rules and regulations
  • Preparing regular reports
  • Coordinating stages of the project with the implementing officer and the whole team of the country package Zambia as well as key stakeholders
  • Supporting the implementing officer of the country package Zambia in updating and/or adapting the project design on the basis of the five success factors of Capacity WORKS (CW knowledge workshop has got to be attended within the first six months of the project or already acquired)
  • Ensuring the connectivity of project/programme management with established GIZ practice by applying Capacity WORKS
  • Identifying the need for short-term assignments within the available budget, planning and steering the assignments, and supporting the national and international short-term experts
  • Coordinating the organisation/running of training measures
  • Ensuring project administration is in place for the German contribution
  • Monitoring and documenting work progress
  • Ensuring a monitoring and evaluation system is in place
  • Supporting the implementing officer of the country package Zambia in preparing and adapting the plan of operations
  • Planning and supporting project-related research
  • Supporting the implementing officer of the country package Zambia in preparing and conducting interim evaluations
  • Organisation and accompanying of visitors, preparing logistics and necessary material
  • Technical tasks
  • Technical alignment of activities with the objectives of the global initiative
  • Technical supervision of the dairy value chain approaches
  • Coordinating all activities with regard to the dairy value chain (including organisational development of dairy cooperatives)
  • Facilitating the establishment and development of Practical Dairy Learning Farms (PDLF) and the Dairy Innovation Centre
Qualifications: 

The essential qualifications are:

  • University degree in agricultural science, agricultural economics, animal science or related disciplines
  • At least 10 years of work experience in the field of rural development
  • Expertise in the following areas: extensive experiences on dairy production and milk transformation and animal husbandry in general
  • Management experience: experience in leading a team; at least 5 years of work experience coordinating international cooperation projects
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Language skills: Fluent command (written and spoken) of English and if possible German;

 Additional:

  • Client and partner orientation, efficient work practices, interdisciplinary thinking and training experience are mandatory
  • trained in Capacity WORKS; if not the project manager should undergo training by a GIZ-accredited multiplier before the commencement of the assignment (preferred) or within the first six month after the commencement of the assignment
  • Experience of collaboration with GIZ is an asset
Start / Duration: 

The activities including monitoring, evaluation and all reports shall be implemented from 01.01.2018 to 31.12.2019.
