Promotion of nutrition-sensitive potato value chains

The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) mandated the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH with the implementation of the global program ‘Promotion of nutrition-sensitive potato value chains in East Africa’. The project runs from 01/2016 to 06/2021 in two countries, namely Kenya and Uganda. In Kenya the implementation has already begun whereas the implementation for Uganda is planned to begin in October 2017.

Assuming overall responsibility for the consulting team – Team leader

  • Technically supervising and backstopping local long-term experts

  •  Identifying the need for short-term and long term expert assignments within the allocated budget, planning and directing expert assignments, and technically supervising short term experts

  • Drafting job descriptions for short-term experts, monitoring service delivery (quality assurance)

  • Bearing accountability for efficient use of resources

  • Development of operation and M&E plan

  • Monitoring of results according to M&E plan

  • Documentation of work progress and contributing to knowledge management

  • Drafting of project reports

  • Where necessary, give support to GIZ in preparing a follow-on phase

  • Frequent travels (at least every three months) to the project region are required

Qualifications: 
  • University degree in agricultural economics, tropical agriculture or related fields
  • At least 10 years of professional experience in managing agricultural value chain projects
  • Professional experience in Uganda and/or countries in East Africa with similar socioeconomic conditions
  • Experience working for international development agencies is required
  • Proficient English skills are required ( at least C1- level according to the Common
  • European Framework of Reference for Languages) , good German language skills
  • constitute an asset (at least B2-level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
  • Good knowledge on the Irish potato value chain is required as well as to related topics (e.g. seed potatoes, GAP, storage, marketing)
